Hello my name is April Zuniga. I currently work at the High Meadows Branch Library in Houston, TX. My branch is part of the Harris County Public Library system. I work as a Senior Children's Assistant which allows me to play the role of a full time Children's Librarian. I have always had some type of involvement with libraries throughout my childhood and adolescence. I used to go to the library every weekend as a child and I would volunteer there after school as a senior in High School. I later was offered a position at the library where I volunteered at and have been in libraries ever since.  The reason I applied for the Literacy Matters Program was because working in libraries made me realize the importance of early childhood literacy. I love being able to connect with families and share the importance of reading, writing, and social interaction. I have seen how it makes a difference in the children in my story time and how happy the parents are to know that they are helping their child succeed. The literacy Matters Program was a way for me to fully understand the importance of early childhood literacy and propel my ambition of becoming someone who could help seal the gap between libraries and families with young children. This program has given me the opportunity to learn new concepts and gain insight of what my purpose is in a library setting and as a person.
