Story Title: It Takes a Village to Raise a Child

Digital Advocacy Story Reflection

Transcript.docx

Meme: It takes a village to raise a child; your public library wants to be that village.

One-Sentence Theme: Your public library is committed to helping support families through all the steps of growth and development by providing a myriad of materials, resources  and programs for both children and their caregivers.

Competencies: Based on the ALA-ALSC's Competencies for Librarians Serving Children in Public Libraries

I. Knowledge of Client Group

     1. Understands theories of infant, child, and adolescent learning and development and their implications for library service.

     6. Understands and responds to the needs of parents, caregivers, and other adults who use the resources of the children's department.

VI. Programming Skills

     1. Designs, promotes, presents, and evaluates a variety of programs for children of all ages, based on their developmental needs and interests and the goals of the library.

     4. Establishes programs and services for parents, individuals and agencies providing childcare, and other professionals in the community who work with children.

     5. Promotes library programs and services to underserved children and families.

a. Who is your target audience? Why is this group your target audience?   Parents, grandparents, family members, caregivers and educators of babies and young children are the target audience for "It Takes a Village" because they are the strongest influences on young children and thus are in the best position to shape the young child's educational future.
b. How does your advocacy story relate to the concept of social justice?    "It Takes a Village" helps shed light on library resources that can help level the playing field for low income families. Libraries provide access to materials and services that parents otherwise might not be able to acquire on their own, thus helping to ensure that families of all class levels have similar chances of educational success with their children.
