Synopsis: Readers will open the book expecting to count monkeys, but are quickly surprised to see other fun and diverse creatures on each page. You will have to count these animals before you find the monkeys.
Five Little Monkeys Sitting in a Tree by Eileen Christelow (Clarion Books, 2004)
Synopsis: Five little monkeys make their way to the river for a nice picnic with Mama. When mama takes a nap five little monkeys climb a tree to tease Mr. Crocodile. They soon find out teasing Mr. Crocodile was a bad idea and learn a very valuable lesson.

Song: "1,2,3 Little Fingers"
The children’s librarian will first count through the numbers in English with the children and then sing the song in English. Then the children’s librarian will count through the numbers in Spanish with the children and then continue to sing the song in Spanish
(To the Tune of 10 little Indians) (Children will sing along and hold up fingers as we count)
One, Two, three little fingers
Four, Five, Six little fingers
Seven, Eight, Nine little fingers
And one more makes Ten.

Closing Rhyme
Cup of Tea Rhyme
Parents and children will mime tea cups with their hands and pouring cups of tea.
Here’s a cup, and here’s a cup
And here’s a pot of tea.
Pour a cup, and pour a cup
And have some tea with me. Yum! (mime taking of sip of tea and rub belly)
Hands-on Learning Component:
With assistant from the parents give each child a pre-folded green piece of construction paper. Provide them with glue, googly eyes, and paper teeth. They will glue the eyes and teeth on the green folded construction paper to make a Mr. Crocodile hand puppet. Children’s librarian will also provide a laminated printable of the rhyme Five Little Monkeys for them to take home. Parents and children will be able to read the rhyme at home with their new hand puppet and practice their reading and math skills. As they finish their craft, they can leave and take the craft home with them.

Early Literacy Aside:
The early literacy skills children will acquire are oral language, phonological awareness, print conventions and awareness, letter knowledge, vocabulary, and background knowledge. The main focus will be on learning how to count through reading. Introducing numbers through reading is a great way to introduce counting and numbers for children. Counting books provide repetition and colorful illustrations to help engage readers. Picture books are a great way to introduce the concept of math for young children.
Early Literacy Aside Example: After children are introduced to numbers, parents should use this opportunity to incorporate counting in everyday activities. Point out and count together with your child with things you see around your house or going to the store. Practice the counting song with your child at home and read other counting books.
Early Literacy Aside Empower: Take advantage of the craft and counting rhyme provided to you at the end of this storytime. It is for you to use and help expand your child's knowledge. You are the example your child will follow. Make the experience a positive one and watch your child grow.
