BIG BOOK

Gossie, by Olivier Dunrea, Big Book (Houghton Mifflin, 2002)

Our first book today is a big book. Pay attention to the pictures to find out what happens to Gossie’s favorite red boots. Read the book.

FLANNELBOARD

Let’s count the ladybugs! Use five flannel pieces to count aloud.

Five Little Ladybugs

I saw a little lady bug flying in the air,

But when I tried to catch her, two bugs were there.

Two little lady bugs flew up in a tree.

I tiptoed very quietly, and then I saw three.

Three little lady bugs--I looked for one more.

I saw one sitting on the ground, that made four.

Four little lady bugs--another one arrived.

I saw her sitting on a flower, and that made five.

Five little lady bugs, all red and black--

I clapped my hands and shouted, and they all flew back!

BOOK

The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear, by Don and Audrey Wood (Child’s Play, 1984)

Our next book is about the little mouse who loves strawberries. What color are strawberries? Let’s read to find out how the little mouse will stop the big hungry bear from eating his freshly picked, red ripe strawberry. Read the book

Let’s sing about all of our favorite red things! Sing song with hand gestures.

I love red, I love red.

That’s what I said, that’s what I said.

Fire trucks, wagons, and strawberries piled high.

Stop signs, hearts, and pizza pies,

Roses, tomatoes, and apples… oh my.

I love red.

That’s what I said.

PUPPET SHOW

“The Little Red Hen”

Caregiver Involement and/or ECRR2 Family Education:

EARLY LITERACY FOCUS: Background Knowledge

Children need background knowledge to later understand what they read. Background knowledge includes knowing information about things, understanding ideas and concepts like color, having thinking skills like predicting, and knowing how stories work. When you talk with your children about everything you see and do together, you are helping them to develop their knowledge.
