One Sentence Theme: When children's librarians actively connect patrons to their collection, children and their families are linked to the library resources they need.
Competencies: Core Competencies for Librarians Serving Children in Public Libraries
I - Knowledge of Client Group:
7. Cultivates an environment which provides for enjoyable and convenient access to and use of library resources.
V - User and Reference Services:
2. Conducts reference/readers’ advisory interviews to assist children and their parents/caregivers with the identification and selection of materials and services, according to their interests and abilities.
8. Encourages use of materials and services through bibliographies, booktalks, displays, electronic documents, and other special tools.
a. Who is your target audience? Why is this group your target audience?
|
My target audience is Children's Librarians. I chose to target them because ultimately they are the link that connects children and families with their library collection. It is important that early literacy experts see themselves as such and promote themselves as much as they promote any other valuable item in their collection. |
b. How does your advocacy story relate to the concept of social justice? |
My advocacy story motivates children's librarians to really embody the idea that they are early literacy experts and to exude this attitude in all of their work. Their interactions with children and families will be the determining factor whether or not appropriate literacy materials are accessible to patrons and not just merely available to them.
