One-sentence Theme: Summer Reading Club is a free, educational tool that's fun and makes a difference in a child's life.

These are the competencies provided by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) that coincide with and support my value of providing quality programs for all children in the community:

Core Competencies for Librarians Serving Children in Public Libraries

VI. Programming Skills

1. Designs, promotes, presents, and evaluates a variety of programs for children of all ages, based on their developmental needs and interests and the goals of the library.

3. Provides library outreach programs which meet community needs and library goals and objectives.

5. Promotes library programs and services to underserved children and families.

a. Who is your target audience? Why is this group your target audience?

My target audience is caregivers and parents of children, infants through 1st grade, who dwell within driving distance of Saginaw, TX because they are the ones who must actually bring the children who will benefit directly from this program to the library that is located in Saginaw. I chose infants through 1st grade because this is a critical stage for building a foundation to support successful future literacy skills.

b. How does your advocacy story relate to the concept of social justice?

All children deserve access to educational, fun materials and programming that provide literacy and language learning opportunities, not just children of well-to-do families or families that do have access to such materials and educated adults within their home. If our country is to live up to its nickname, the "Land of Opportunity", then more programs such as the public library summer reading programs need to be offered, advertised, and actively promoted so that people are aware of the options that are available to them and their children.
