Rolando's Digital Advocacy Story Reflection Script

Meme:  Children's Literacy Starts @ Your Library®

One-sentence Theme: When public librarians teach parents how to help their children develop early literacy skills through story time, songs, and interactive play, literacy rises and all parties benefit.

Competencies:

Based on the American Library Association's Core Competencies:
5C. The methods used to interact successfully with individuals of all ages and groups to provide consultation, mediation, and guidance in their use of recorded knowledge and information.

5E. The principles and methods of advocacy used to reach specific audiences to promote and explain concepts and services.

Based on the Association for Library Service to Children Core Competencies:
VI. Programming Skills
5. Promotes library programs and services to under served children and families
VII. Advocacy, Public Relations, and Networking Skills
3. Ensures that children have full access to library materials, resources, and services as prescribed by the Library Bill of Rights.

a. Who is your target audience? Why is this group your target audience?  The target audience for my digital advocacy story was new parents, Spanish speaking immigrant parents and older siblings. I am currently a children's librarian in a public library system that is within a population of over 75 percent Spanish-only speakers and an illiteracy rate of over fifty percent, I chose this group as my primary target audience. If I can assist parents with the skills they need to teach their children to speak, read and write in English and Spanish illiteracy rates in my region will begin to lower.
b. How does your advocacy story relate to the concept of social justice?  Reading materials in the homes of impoverished children is virtually non-existent. For this reason, public libraries must inform the parents of these children that free resources are available for them and their children in the form of books, audio and visual materials, instructional programs, literacy and language assistance, and much more. By informing parents of the wide array of resources provided by libraries and librarians available to assist them with the use of the resources, reluctance to use these services will be reduced and all parties will benefit in the end.
