Meme: Nurturing Lifelong Readers @ Your Library ®
One Sentence Theme: Story time is more than just stories: it promotes literacy while creating wonderful memories and nurtures lifelong readers.
Competencies:
These are the competencies on which my value for serving children in public libraries is founded:
VI. Programming Skills:
1. Designs, promotes, presents and evaluates a variety of programs for children of all ages, based on their developmental needs and interests and the goals of the library.
2. Identifies and utilizes skilled resource people to present programs and information.
3. Provides library outreach programs which meet community needs and library goals and objectives.
4. Establishes programs and services for parents, individuals, and agencies providing childcare, and other professionals in the community who work with children.
5. Promotes library programs and services to under-served children and families.
a. Who is your target audience? Why is this group your target audience? |
I have targeted young children, their families, and their caregivers. This is my target audience because I would like to encourage parents and caregivers to consider attending story time to develop emergent literacy skills in young children. I also want to demonstrate that story time is more than just reading stories. Children develop and strengthen fine motor skills with crafts and gross motor skills with activities such as the parachute. Children also learn the concept of rhythm by singing songs and they learn the very important skill of socializing with others.

b. How does your advocacy story relate to the concept of social justice? |
Children who are literate can later become valuable citizens who contribute positively to the community. Children need to begin developing literacy skills very early on. Attending story time is one way to encourage this and to have fun while doing it. |
