Meme: You are Due for a Checkout @ Your Public Library ®

One-sentence Theme:

When parents feel comfortable getting a library card and accessing programs, services, and materials, children will benefit educationally.

Competencies:

Based on the American Library Association division ALSC (Association for Library Service to Children) competencies for Librarians Serving Young Children in Public Libraries.

IV. Knowledge of Materials

2. Provides a wide and diverse variety of electronic resources, audiovisual materials, print materials, and other resource materials to best serve the needs of children and their caregivers.

a. Who is your target audience? Why is this group your target audience?

My project targets parents and children in the community who may be hesitant to attend library programs. I decided to use this group as my target audience because it is often the most hesitant members of the community who could benefit most from the resources and services available at public libraries.

b. How does your advocacy story relate to the concept of social justice?   My advocacy project relates to social justice in that it targets members of the community who feel hesitant to walk through the doors of the library. Many of our most at-risk for low-literacy families in the community need an extra nudge and to be reminded that the library is a safe place where they can use computers or access story time for free.
