Welcome to Podcast Booktalk number 148 from the Crab Cake Public Library in Crab Cake, Texas. I'm your host, Johnny Booktruck. Today we're going to talk about a junior fiction novel called Robert in the Basement, by Pollyanna Twinkletoes. Robert is a 10-year-old boy who goes to live with his grandfather in New Haven, Connecticut. Robert's bedroom is in a converted basement that hides a mysterious secret. One night after everyone is in bed, an elevator appears that takes young Robert down into the basement of the basement. In this magical world of flying dogs, one-eyed raccoons, and teddy bear armies, Robert meets Razzle, a giant gecko lizard who leads him to the castle of the Red Rose. There he meets Princess Allison who persuades Robert and Razzle to go on a quest to save Red Rose Kingdom. But can they defeat the evil Teddy Tangiers, or will they be trapped forever in the dungeons of Stufftalon? To find out, read Robert in the Basement by Pollyanna Twinkletoes. This has been Podcast Booktalk. I'm your host, Johnny Booktruck. Join us next time, and be sure to come by the library for this and other great books. Thanks for listening.*

ALA Core Competences:

1J. Effective communication techniques (verbal and written).

4B. The application of information, communication, assistive, and related technology and tools consistent with professional ethics and prevailing service norms and applications.

4D. The principles and techniques necessary to identify and analyze emerging technologies and innovations in order to recognize and implement relevant technological improvements.

11.  Description of Example and Its Use in the Library:

I used Vocaroo to create what I call Podcast Booktalk, a series of booktalks available via a wiki that is created using the Vocaroo tool. Booktalks are a way to get people interested in certain book titles, and this audio version is similar to book trailer videos. This is especially helpful to the visually impaired who are more apt to read large print or listen to audio books. With that in mind, I included large print of the script on the wiki page.

12.  Description of How the Example Capitalizes on the Tool’s Potential:

At first glance the tool looks too limited for use in a library setting, but further investigation and a little creativity proved otherwise. The tool has so many ways to share the information that it could be used to create instructional audio of all kinds for library use. This can be especially useful to patrons who are visually impaired or those who have limited literacy skills. This example shows how library information can be communicated in an easy-to-access format, and one that is also easy to navigate for the creators.

* Robert in the Basement, along with everything else in my Web 2.0 sample, is purely fictitious.
