Hello my name is Elena Baeza, at this time I am not working at any library. However, I volunteered for a public and an academic library in 2011-2012. Since then, I have been involved in library organizations and have continued to volunteer in different capacities. I am currently a member of Reforma, TLA, ALA and BRLA as well as a participant of the El Paso Area Library Consortium.
After receiving my undergraduate degree, I wasn’t certain what I wanted to do. At that time I was working as a substitute teacher and quickly learned how important education was to children especially in literacy. Soon after I was offered a work stipend from a library advocating organization called El Paso Area Library Consortium, which placed me at my local public library. There is where I really learned a vast amount about the profession. My favorite section was the children’s area where I learned about programming, outreach and story time. Finally, after a year of soul searching and falling in love with the library profession I realized that the public library was the place I wanted to spend my professional time at. A great opportunity came knocking soon after and I was awarded to be part of the Literacy Matters program.
